Horror on the 13th – July 2012 (Terry Moore’s Rachel Rising)

A lot of people are horrified and scared of the word “death.” What happens to us when we die? Where does our mind and soul go?What happened to the loved ones that we had? Well, in Terry Moore’s Rachel Rising, we may not get all those questions answered, but we are introduced to a young girl named Rachel who looks like she’s come back from the dead.

At the same time, we’re introduced to a young girl. Everyone around her dies in a horrible fashion. Could this be death herself?

Horroronthe13July2012AThose are just some of the main characters that we are introduced to in this amazingly haunting and scary indie comic. Terry Moore is the creator – not only does he write the book, he also does the artwork and letters the book. You may be asking yourself “what about the color?” But it’s a plain black and white book, which helps for the creep factor in this hauntingly beautiful comic.

Moore is known to be one of the best writers in the indie world when it comes to relationships, and we get exactly that in this book. What I find amazing is the relationship Rachel has with her friends and her loved ones, like her crazy aunt and her best friend.

What we get in Rachel Rising is a truly remarkable, haunting book with pages and panels that give me goosebumps after I’m done reading.

My only complaint is that it’s a fast read if you read it in issues, but very much like the Walking Dead, it makes you want to come back for more. Moore’s artwork isn’t the most commercialized artwork, like the work of Oliver Coipell or John Ramita Jr., but there is something that I love about his artwork. Moore’s Rachel is an absolutely beautiful woman. This is not surprising, as Moore has written several books on this subject.

Rachel Rising is that small little independent horror story or movie that should have been made in the 70’s, but instead, we are treated to the best – that’s right – horror comic around. I would love to tell you everything about this book and spoil it for you, but part of the charm is going and finding out: why is Rachel back? What does she want? And who’s that little girl?

Rachel Rising is nominated for two Harvey Awards this year: Best New Series and Best Continuing or Limited Series. It’s available both on Amazon and via Comixology, so do yourself a favor and pick up this book. You’ll thank me for it.

Terry will be at San Diego Comic Con at Booth 2109 across the aisle from DC Comics.
