Advanced Review:The Legend of Luther Strode #1

by bucky· November 30, 2012· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
I picked up the first issue of the original miniseries The Strange Talent of Luther Strode from Justin and Tradd at New York Comic Con in 2011 by the suggestion of my friend Matt. He told me that the first issue was really good and I should get it, I was hesitant mostly because I didn’t want to put another comic on my pull list if I ended up liking it. So over the NYCC weekend we walked around and we saw Justin and Tradd signing at the Image booth. Matt went over and started talking to them, telling them that he liked the book and that he was trying to get me to try it out. Justin explained the premise of the book for me and I thought, why the hell not and decided to buy the first issue from them, they signed it. Later that day I was in the hotel room and I read the first issue and I fucking loved it.

Advanced Review: Comeback #1

by bucky· November 15, 2012· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
I have not heard of either Ed Brisson or Michael Walsh and I hadn’t heard of this comic book either but the cover alone was compelling enough for me to pick up this comic and give it a shot. I didn’t really know what to expect with a title like Comeback and the cover being white and light blue didn’t really give me any ideas. After reading the first issue I will tell you that I will be back for the rest of the series because this comic has a lot of different aspects that appeal to me as a reader.

Advanced Review: Invincible #95

by bucky· September 20, 2012· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
Invincible is a comic I’ve been reading since the beginning of its debut. One of the reasons I like it so much is because of Kirkman and his talents as a writer. He was always great at bringing back storylines he brought up in his comics even if it was long after they were brought up. Many issues back Monster Girl and Robot disappeared to another dimension to take care of some aliens that attack Earth every so often, once and for all. After a few issues Monster Girl and Robot came back and they were changed, before they left they were a couple and when they came back they had broken up because of something that happened between them.

Advanced Review: Happy! #1

by bucky· September 18, 2012· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
When you read a Grant Morrison comic you never know what you’re getting yourself into, and that includes runs on huge big two comics like Batman or X-Men. So when he’s writing comics that are original ideas where he doesn’t have editorial telling him he can’t use this character or this needs to happen so that something else can happen over there. So when creators who are known for out there ideas for a reader it’s always exciting to see them get the free reign to do whatever they want. So when I heard about Morrison and Robertson new book at Image I was looking forward to it but I also didn’t read anything about it because I wanted to go in blind, but since this is a review the next few paragraphs will contain spoilers.

Advanced Review: Stumptown Vol.2 #1

by bucky· September 11, 2012· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
I’m going to start this review off with a couple of confessions. I am not as well read as Greg Rucka when it comes to the Private Investigator as a genre, but I do share his enthusiasm. I am a huge fan of Greg Rucka’s comic book work. I’ve been reading him for years. Greg Rucka is one of the first comic book writers I had the pleasure of meeting when I first started reading comics. (It was at Midtown Comics signing and he was shocked and pleased to see me hand him the first Gotham Central trade to sign.) My last confession, I did not know that another volume of Stumptown was happening, let alone coming out, though I was pleased to find out that this was happening. Greg Rucka and I have something in common though, and that is our love of the loner private investigator and mysteries, this comic continues in that tradition. The comic opens up with a band called Tailhook playing a show in Portland. The scene is established as if it was being written like an episode of television.  The outside of the venue is shown with the music playing then melting into a shot […]

Advanced Review: The Manhattan Projects #6

by bucky· September 11, 2012· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
The first thing you will notice about this comic book is the cover. Duh. That’s the first thing you notice with any comic book. But look at this cover; it is simple but extremely effective. It catches the eye, it stands out, and it makes you look at it and pick it up and flip through it. A desire comes over you; you ask yourself, what is this comic? What is it about? I need to know more. Then you look at the cover, and it informs you of the creators, the issue, the price, the name of the story, and most importantly what the comic is about. It’s written their on its face. I think this comic offers the most unique covers of any comics, simple but effective. Then you actually read the comic and that’s where you get the pleasure. This issue tells the story of German scientist Helmutt Grottrup. Helmutt escapes from the Germans who want to continue where the Third Reich left off even after losing WWII. As Helmutt escapes he runs through a forest but trips on a tree root and falls down a hill right into the lap of Russians, who go on to […]

Guarding the Globe #1 is the debut of the on-going adventures of the government super-team Guardians of the Globe that was created by Robert Kirkman and company in the pages of Invincible. The Guardians have had their own successful mini-series and now it seems they are ready to tackle their own missions and personal problems.

Advanced Review: Harbinger #3

by bucky· August 13, 2012· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
Valiant hasn’t been this good since, well, ever! That is the first thought I had as I opened up Harbinger #3 written by Joshua Dysart with art by both Khari Evans and Lewis Larosa. I don’t mean that in a negative way at all as I loved both XO and Turok when I was younger. It is more the way that they are approaching every single aspect of every book they put out now. They are paying close attention to the small details and crafting a universe that, in all honesty, is like nothing on shelves right now.

Advanced Review: Justice League Doom

by bucky· February 27, 2012· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
Say what you want about the DC Animated films. I know some people love them and some people hate them. My personal two favorites are All-Star Superman and Justice League New Frontier. Other ones have been hit or miss with me. So here is my review of  the new animated film Justice League: Doom. Justice League: Doom is based on the Mark Waid Justice League story arc “Tower of Babel.”

Advanced Review: I, Vampire #1

by bucky· September 26, 2011· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
Vampires exist in the DC Universe. Andrew Bennett is a vampire who believes they can co-exist with humanity, mainly by staying under the radar. His ex-lover, Mary, Queen of Blood, believes vampires should not try to co-exist with the human… livestock; vampires should rule them. Needless to say, this puts these two lovers at odds with one another. We catch up with them as Mary is making her declaration of war and Andrew is trying to get her to reconsider. Andrew doesn’t doubt his convictions about vampire-human relations, but you know that losing Mary has broken his heart. Mary is a fantastic… I don’t want to say villain… let’s say counterpoint to Andrew. Mary is tired of being viewed as a second-class citizen and you understand her justification for what she is doing.

Advanced Review: Pigs #1

by bucky· September 09, 2011· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
I love a good political drama, such as the new film The Debt, but I am not here to give you a review of that film. I am here to talk to you about the new book from Image comics called Pigs, by Nate Cosby and Ben McCool and the amazing artist Breno Temura. No, it is not the story of the three little pigs. It is the a story of a second-generation KGB Cuban sleeper cell who is here to overthrow the U.S. government. I know some people may look at this book as anti-American propaganda. But it is not – it is a very important part of history that is overlooked by storytellers, not just creators, and not just in comics, but in all mediums. What the team of Cosby and McCool is doing is giving us a very smart political drama. We are introduced to the world of sleeper cells, which only a few people know about. 50 years after the Bay of Pigs invasion that lasted only 13 days in the 1960’s, we find out that there are still a few sleeper cells from Mother Russia around. Now the question that we are asking in this […]

It is not often that we here at Comic Impact get advanced copies of comics but Daniel Freedman and Tom Coker have been nice enough to supply us with anadvanced copy of their new Image comic Undying Love which comes out this week!  The book itself looks to grow the vampire mythos into a bold new direction. I am sure you are saying to yourself, “Self, why do I want to read another book about sparkly vampires who are mopey?” Read on to find out why this book is none of those things and find out why this could be your next favorite action/horror book.

Advanced Review: X-Men #1

by bucky· July 04, 2010· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
For sometime now, we have been hearing  about this all new X-Men comic, that is going to have vampires in the first story arc. I personally think it is a bit silly.Well, guess what I read last night? That’s right, the new X-men number 1 from Victor Gischler (‘The Death of Dracula’) and artwork by Paco Medina (‘Deadpool’). How was it? How did I get a copy, and does it spoil ‘Second Coming’? Read on to find out. First off this issue does not spoil ‘Second Coming‘. Thank God, I would be so fucking mad if it did. So you can read this when it hits comic book stores on  Thursday July 7th 2010. How did get a copy? Well, sometimes it helps working at a comic book shop. Now was it any good? I am sure you’re dieing to know. I love Paco Medina’s artwork, and I have been loving his work on Deadpool. When Deadpool joined The X-Men a while back, I told myself I would love to see Medina working on an X-book. I was in love with his Wolverine in this issue, I mean who does not love Logan with a cowboy hat, I mean come on! What about the […]

Advanced Review: Charmed #1

by bucky· June 10, 2010· in Advanced Review· 0 comments
When I heard Zenescope was putting a Charmed comic out I was wondering how it would work. I was always a big fan of the show and I was afraid it would be hard to pick up the essence of the show so long after it had been on the air.  After reading the first issue I have hope for the series.
