Another Denver Comic Con has come and gone, this time, over the Memorial Day weekend. In only its fourth year, DCC had 101,500 attendees, up from 86,500 last year. To help make this possible, they rented some 500,000 square feet of the Convention Center — an increase of 20,000 square feet over last year, and just shy of the entire building. Even with an increase of size and numbers, the flow of traffic was handled well and congestion was kept to a minimum in comparison to other comparable conventions I’ve been to. The staff is still some of the friendliest I’ve dealt with and never seemed to get frustrated dealing with all the attendees.

Along with the panels and special guests, a big part of the fun of any big comic book convention is the fans. Many attendees travel from all over the globe to visit these conventions to express their passions, meet people from all over with similar interests, and dressing up as their favorite characters. The annually-held WonderCon kick off down in Anaheim, California, seemed a little light on the floor this Easter weekend, but that didn’t stop the many fans who came dressed up as someone from their favorite movie, television show, or comic book from all the photographers and photoshoots taking place outside of the con doors. Emerald City Comicon is the Northwest’s premiere pop culture convention. It keeps most of its focus around comics and is said that the founder wanted to model it around the East-coast’s successful Heroes Con. I have been every year since 2012 and I have to say that it does an excellent job melding worlds together and making it a con with something for everyone. I don’t typically go to any conventions for its TV or film presence, so ECCC is my favorite con of the year because of the comic talent it brings in. That being said, this is the first year that I did take advantage of the celebrity photo ops and autograph area to meet Hayley Atwell.

Ah Comikaze, what was once a small con in the bottom floor of the massive Los Angeles Convention center with a rocky start is now top floor entertainment laser focused on growth under the guidance of Stan Lee’s POW Entertainment. Unlike the standard con going experience Comikaze forgoes panel rooms for a massive center stage in which to hold everything from panels and video previews to costume contests.

Hello all you beautiful Comic Impact readers. I’m in a pleasant mood because I had an incredible time at the Long Beach Comic Con. Now in its 5th year the Long Beach Comic Con has become my favorite convention around. LBCC is big but not too big because it doesn’t have much of a Hollywood presence to attract hoards of people for celebrity sightseeing. It’s small but not so small feel bored and there is always something to do.

My first East Coast convention was this year’s Baltimore Comic Con, which took place at the Baltimore Convention Center, spanning three days, and utilized a larger part of the exhibit hall than previous years. It was relaxed with a great atmosphere, no overcrowding, and was mostly comic-centric.

Downtown Atlanta played host to another year of Dragon*Con this past Labor Day weekend as the nerds and costumed fans came out in droves. The wonderful Media Relations for the con personally extended an invitation to the offices of Comic Impact and I was more than happy to act as the company representative. The Press badge pickup was located at a separate hotel and the process was quite simple and took place without any hiccups. I then accompanied my friend to her location to pick up her weekend badge and the pathways were easily marked and we were in and out in a matter of 20 minutes. Granted, we got there a bit after badge pickup started.

The first ever Her Universe Fashion Show for aspiring fashion designers and fellow geeks alike have been given the opportunity to show off their skills on the runway. These men and women had to design couture fashion based around pop culture with the prize of a life time the chance to create a fashion line exclusively for Hot Topic. Last night, Comic Impact attended the Wolverine Unleashed Screening, on the Fox studio lot, here in Los Angeles, California. This was my first time watching the film and I was more than happy with what I saw. I’ll tell you this much, it is by far, one of the best comic films of all time. I think The Wolverine is even more superior than the Avengers.

All clichés aside, in a space just slightly larger than most people’s living rooms, Creative Comics features all the comics and related merchandise you could ever need, and even some items you never knew you wanted. For the last 11 years, Free Comic Book Day has been bringing in new readers and existing fans to sample the latest independent and mainstream creations in order to drive awareness, generate sales and cultivate new customers in a business niche – the small, independent comic book specialty store – which is challenging to thrive in today’s market. While some people may claim that this is a dying trade, I would argue that this particular store is taking an industry-wide slump and showing the world just how it should be done.
