Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #28

by bucky· December 02, 2013· in Reviews· 0 comments tags: Bobby Curnow, IDW Publishing, Kevin Eastman, Mateus Santolouco, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tom Waltz.
It’s been a fun ride and my entry back into the Turtle-verse, but City Fall has come to a satisfying conclusion! This issue has a little something for everyone, whether it be Raph against Leo, Shredder and Splinter facing off, or clumsy Beebop and Rocksteady making a mess of things. This issue is full of action and excitement, but still manages to bring home that the main theme is family. Through everything that Splinter and his sons have been through in the last 8 issues, you can really see the bond they all share as they stop at nothing to rescue their lost brother, Leo.

Review: Star Trek Khan #1

by bucky· October 21, 2013· in Reviews· 0 comments tags: David Messina, IDW Publishing, Mike Johnson, Star Trek, Star Trek Khan
One of my favorite movies of 2013, Star Trek Into Darkness, came as quite a surprise to me. I noticed that this movie has been met with mixed reviews, the more negative being from long time fans of the many series. I have also been a fan of the original series and TNG for quite some time, but I tend to welcome changes and new storytelling concepts with open arms. The movie is not without its flaws, but I was able to view it as its own universe, without getting hung up on what is and is not canon. One of the issues fans took to this reinterpretation, was that one of Star Trek’s most well known villains, Khan Noonien Singh, was portrayed by British actor, Benidict Cumberbatch. Star Trek: Khan is a 5 part mini-series that serves as an origin story that will jump back and forth between his early years and the present day, but will basically bridge the nearly 300 year gap between his upbringing, leading up to Into Darkness.

Horror on the 13th – September 2012 (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

by bucky· September 13, 2012· in Horror on the 13th· 0 comments tags: Angel and Faith, Brian K. Vaughan, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dark Horse, IDW Publishing, Jeph Loeb, Joss Whedon
I think it’s safe to consider that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is Joss Whedon’s baby. Even since the cancellation of the show 2003 the world has continued to have new Buffy stories, including the spin off show Angel, and a slew of comic books, video games, and books. I came into the Buffy party late, really late. I didn’t make my way through the series until 2008, way after both Buffy and Angel were off air and both comics series continuing the story after each show’s cancellation were half a year, maybe more, into their runs.

HORROR on the 13th: March 2012 (Joe Hill)

by bucky· March 13, 2012· in Horror on the 13th· 0 comments tags: IDW Publishing, Joe Hill, Locke and Key, Roda Rage
Horror! Yes, horror. It’s horrifying when I think about how much time I spend thinking and talking about horror. I sometimes imagine my life without horror, and I don’t know who I’d be at that point.Enough about me as a person, I think that it’s time to dive into my feature of this month. I was trying to think about what I haven’t already talked about in this column, and there is a certain author that is surprisingly absent from this column. Joe Hill is a fantastic horror writer from fantastic horror stock. In fact, he’s writing a comic with his father, Stephen King. It’s called Road Rage. I have yet to read it, but I have heard good things.

Horror on the 13th – February 2012 (vampire,Zombie andLove)

Happy Valentine’s Day! Well, the day before it anyway. It does seem like a good day for horror. I think that it has to do with the fact that if you’re single, then this is a shit holiday. If you’re in a couple, this is a stressful holiday. Either way, there’s a little bit of horror involved. Plus, Valentine’s Day has hearts and hearts pump blood. Scary stuff involved! Speaking of blood, this month I am featuring the most romantic of all the monsters (to the mainstream media): VAMPIRES! Personally, I think that any monster can be romanticized. In fact, most of them were born from the romantic era, but that’s a different article for a different time. I digress, vampires have come to symbolize forbidden love.

Knock, knock! Who’s there? Comic Impact POW podcast. No joke, that’s who’s there. Ok, that was bad, but know what’s not bad? Doctor Who by Joshua Hale Fialkov, and IDW publishing. Simon went with the good Doctor as his pick of the week for the first week in February.Sheldon was not happy with his pick, but he was more than happy to talk about Winter Soldier by Ed Brubaker. The boys get into it, as Simon also enjoyed Animal Man by Jeff Lemire. Sheldon did not like this one either.

Sequential Sunday: Best of 2011 (Part 1)

As 2011 comes to a close, I can say with a bit of relief that the amount of quality content being published within the world of comics continues to increase steadily. The interest in recent years in high-end, lavish, oversized archival editions and spiffy comic related art books signifies that people are not just reading comics for their obvious entertainment value, but also seeing the medium more and more as the valid literary and artistic arena it’s been since day one. As such I’ve assembled a list of 2011’s best that includes titles from across the increasingly eclectic (yet all welcoming) world that are the comics of today.

Horror on the 13th: July 2011 (ZOMBIES!!!)

Did you hear the news? Evil Dead is officially being redone! I’m kind of excited, mostly because it’s Sam Raimi’s company that’s doing it. I think that’ll get it done right. You’re probably wondering why I started this installment with some movie news, and you’d be right to wonder that. “Has Susan finally lost it?” is what you’re asking. The answer is no, not yet. I know I’m here to talk about horror comics, but I felt that this Evil Dead news was a nice lead in to July being ZOMBIE MONTH!!!

It’s the 13th and you should all know what that means (you know, since we established this would be happening once a month last month). It’s time for the monthly dose of HORROR! Muahahaha! Ok, so that doesn’t work as well when I type it, but I can assure you that I have an excellent evil laugh. Just wait until you have to see me do this on video! I gave a lot of amazingly scary suggestions as to what to read last month in the horror department. This month is no different, but I am not here to summarize. I feel that skimming over some of these books simply does not do them justice. I would rather give you some background and history into the frightening field of horror that I feature. We all know that the best ghost stories told are rich and full of meaning. I want to treat this horror column the same way.

Horror – the genre has been around since the movie industry started, because who doesn’t love a good scare, right? Guess what. There are also horror comics, and they have been around a long time, too. The problem with horror comics is the exact same problem that horror movies have. There are so many of them made all the time, and there is no way to tell whether or not they are going to be awesome or terrible. That is where I come in.

Sequential Sunday: Best of 2010 (Part 1)

A year ago this week, I was having a tough time of compiling a scaled down “Best of the Year” list due to the unexpected flurry of note-worthy material released during 2009. Now I find the task even harder considering the avalanche of great releases that saw print in 2010. A chief reason for this is the recent explosion of exceptional archival comic strip collections, lavish artist career overviews, and beautifully produced art books by publishers like Fantagraphics, IDW, and Flesk Publications. Add to this numerous comic book mini-series, one-shots, and monthly titles more than worthy of note and you have a year that would command any sequential art enthusiast’s attention. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the great material that hit the shelves in 2010!
