Horror on the 13th – October 2012 (The Zombie Shop)

by bucky· October 13, 2012· in Horror on the 13th· 0 comments tags: Dark Horse, Manga, Rei Mikamoto, The Zombie Shop
Are you tired of the overused “We are them, they are us” philosophizing associated with many of today’s post-apocalyptic zombie stories? If so, you would do yourself well to pick up the manga series Reiko The Zombie Shop by Rei Mikamoto, the first 6 volumes of which are available in the U.S. from Dark Horse Comics. The emphasis here is on injecting massive amounts of imagination into stories of reanimated corpses, demonic creatures, child murderers and the seemingly innumerable ways the human body can be ripped, slashed and shredded to pieces.

Horror on the 13th – September 2012 (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

by bucky· September 13, 2012· in Horror on the 13th· 0 comments tags: Angel and Faith, Brian K. Vaughan, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dark Horse, IDW Publishing, Jeph Loeb, Joss Whedon
I think it’s safe to consider that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is Joss Whedon’s baby. Even since the cancellation of the show 2003 the world has continued to have new Buffy stories, including the spin off show Angel, and a slew of comic books, video games, and books. I came into the Buffy party late, really late. I didn’t make my way through the series until 2008, way after both Buffy and Angel were off air and both comics series continuing the story after each show’s cancellation were half a year, maybe more, into their runs.

Horror on the 13th – June 2012 (Aliens Omnibus #1)

by bucky· June 13, 2012· in Horror on the 13th· 0 comments tags: Aliens: Female War, Aliens: Nightmare Asylum, Aliens: Outbreak, Dark Horse
You want the horror? Well it’s your lucky day because it’s that time of the month where we point our fingers in the direction of the gore and set you loose in the world to find it. Doubtless you’re familiar with the recently released movie Prometheus by director Ridley Scott? If not then you probably need to get out more. This film has been bringing in a fair amount of mixed reviews lately; some hate it, some love it. But I’m not here to talk about Prometheus, oh no, I’m here because I can tell that you fine people want more bloody Alien goodness. I can see the hunger in your eyes. It’s saying you don’t just want science-fiction, but you want some well written science-fiction horror!

Sequential Sunday: Best of 2011 (Part 2)

As we enter mid-January and 2011 becomes more and more of a memory, I’d like to close out my look at the most notable releases of the past year so that those who may have missed the following can seek them out, or those who have read these be reminded that they are very worthy of a second (or third) read. So, without further ado let’s begin with…

Sequential Sunday: Best of 2011 (Part 1)

by John Mueller· January 01, 2012· in Sequential Sunday· 0 comments tags: A Crime Does Not Pay Primer, Back Issue, Bruce Timm, Dark Horse, Darwin Cooke, Dave Gibbons, Denis Kitchen, Fantagraphics, IDW, IDW Publishing, Last Gasp, Pinocchio, Richard Sala, Stephanie Buscema, The Hidden, The Rocketeer Adventures, Tony Harris, TwoMorrows Publishing, Winshluss
As 2011 comes to a close, I can say with a bit of relief that the amount of quality content being published within the world of comics continues to increase steadily. The interest in recent years in high-end, lavish, oversized archival editions and spiffy comic related art books signifies that people are not just reading comics for their obvious entertainment value, but also seeing the medium more and more as the valid literary and artistic arena it’s been since day one. As such I’ve assembled a list of 2011’s best that includes titles from across the increasingly eclectic (yet all welcoming) world that are the comics of today.

Horror on the 13th: June 2011 (June Gloom)

AH! What a lovely day for blood and terror. I feel like “June Gloom” is a missed opportunity for a lot of horror to be watched and read. It has an added benefit of the sun breaking through, much the way it does at the end of a vampire or monster movie, providing the main characters with hope. Personally, I find it adds to the kitsch factor, which is not always a bad thing. Sometimes clichés are clichés for a reason. Welcome to Horror on the 13th – the “June Gloom” edition! Once again, I’m forced to choose between a number of excellent horror titles, but – since June also happens to be my birthday month – I decided to go with some personal favorites. I will touch on more of the recent June books in my horror segment on “Did You Catch All That?” On to the horror that makes me tingle with happy!

As an addendum to that article I’d like to give some suggestions to those who’d like to explore the work of this comic art master via some of the books currently in print as well as those that are soon to be released.

Sequential Sunday: Mesmo Delivery

by John Mueller· March 21, 2010· in Sequential Sunday· 0 comments tags: Ad House, Dark Horse, Memo Delivery, Rafael Grampá
It is always exhilarating to discover an artist whose output is such a visceral rush that viewing their work is like going from 0 to 60 in two seconds. This is just the rush I felt recently when, in my favorite comic shop, I opened Mesmo Delivery to a random page as for me, my mind was already made up: this one’s coming with me and moving straight to the top of my (perpetual and ever daunting) “to read” pile. Mesmo Delivery by Rafael Grampá tells the deceptively simple story of Rufo, an ex-boxer and truck driver, hired to deliver an unspecified and highly secret shipment to an unnamed destination point. Along with him is an associate named Sangrecco, an aging Elvis impersonator who claims to not only know karate, but to have “five other styles” amongst his abilities.

Sequential Sunday: Best of 2009 (Part 1)

I initially thought the task of compiling a list of the best in comics and related art books released in 2009 would be relatively easy. Boy was I wrong. We saw a wealth of amazing output from the indie press, mainstream publishers and collected works of illustrative artists of the past and present.2009 has been a fantastic year overall for sequential art, the best of the last several, with my only real problem being finding the time (and money) to take them all in. So without further ado here is Part I in my two-part series for the Best Comics and Comic-Related Releases of 2009…

Sequential Sunday: The Perry Bible Fellowship

by John Mueller· November 22, 2009· in Sequential Sunday· 0 comments tags: Dark Horse, Nicholas Gurewitch, The Perry Bible Fellowship
Many of the best creative endeavors are bound to be short lived. An artist will usually know when he’s said all he has to say before running the risk of going stale or to simply move on to the next phase of his artistic career. This certainly happens in the world of comics and seems to now apply to the brilliant strip The Perry Bible Fellowship by Nicholas Gurewitch.

Sequential Sunday: Indie Horror Comic Roundup

With Halloween right around the corner and all the spooky connotations that come with it hanging in the air it seemed like a good time to scour the shelves of my favorite comic book store for some seasonally appropriate material. The store in question is Comics Factory in Pasadena, CA where, if you’re an indie reader like me, you’re in luck as their selection of independents is so wide it almost rivals all the stock of the Big Two put together.
