Denver Comic Con 2015: Highlights

Another Denver Comic Con has come and gone, this time, over the Memorial Day weekend. In only its fourth year, DCC had 101,500 attendees, up from 86,500 last year. To help make this possible, they rented some 500,000 square feet of the Convention Center — an increase of 20,000 square feet over last year, and just shy of the entire building. Even with an increase of size and numbers, the flow of traffic was handled well and congestion was kept to a minimum in comparison to other comparable conventions I’ve been to. The staff is still some of the friendliest I’ve dealt with and never seemed to get frustrated dealing with all the attendees.

Arc Reaction: Detective Comics #37-40

by bucky· March 09, 2015· in Arc Reaction· 0 comments tags: Brian Buccellato, DC Comics, Detective Comics, Francis Manapul
There are a lot of takes on Batman, but we all have our favorites. Sometimes he’s campy, other times he’s gritty. Batman’s one of the most versatile characters in media today. My favorite take on Batman isn’t one steeped in the DC universe. I like to see Batman the noir detective, who’s more of a vigilante than a superhero. So needless to say, I absolutely adore Detective Comics from Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato, they’re doing my Batman. This is my Batman book. Beware spoilers.

Review: Gotham Academy #1

by bucky· October 06, 2014· in Reviews· 0 comments tags: Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher, DC Comics, Gotham Academy, Karl Kerschl
Gotham Academy begins its run! It’s a new look at Gotham from (deep breath) writers Becky Cloonan & Brenden Fletcher, artist Karl Keschl, and colorists Geyser & Dave McCaig. This is an interesting sort of book to see from DC Comics, and I like to see them taking a risk on a weird property like this. The obvious shorthand for Gotham Academy is to say it’s Batman meets Harry Potter, and the good news is I mean that in the best way possible. We’re invited to follow students through their time at a prestigious school located in Gotham. What could go wrong?

Review: Earth 2 #22

by bucky· April 08, 2014· in Reviews· 0 comments tags: DC Comics, Earth 2, Nicola Scott, Tom Taylor
Earth 2 is easily one of my favorite books being published right now. I loved Robinson’s run on it and Taylor has been doing an amazing job continuing the thread. I love that this series has all the interesting characters that I care about without having to read 10 different books to get the full story. It’s all wonderfully self-contained. I look forward to this book every month and eagerly read it first of my pulls.

The idea is to make people aware of the amazing talent that’s out there and hopefully to get you interested in reading new books! This month we’re taking a look into the mind of Dustin Nguyen.

Review: Earth 2 #21

by bucky· March 11, 2014· in Reviews· 0 comments tags: DC Comics, Earth 2, Nicola Scott, Tom Taylor
Issue 21 welcomes writer, Tom Taylor, with new arc, “The Kryptonian,” but manages to keep in mind everything that has come before in this series. It isn’t a very good jumping on point, even considering the shift in creative team. This issue is more for to further develop the story that was already in place involving the team of Batman, Lois Lane, and others as they try to figure out how to stop an insane Superman gone evil.

Review: Red Hood and the Outlaws #28

by bucky· February 24, 2014· in Reviews· 0 comments tags: DC Comics, James Tynion IV, Red Hood and the Outlaws, Stephen Segovia
Tynion tells an entertaining standalone story for his final issue of Red Hood and the Outlaws. Tynion’s portrayal of Jason tells a bit about his entire run, with pencils by Stephen Segovia and colored by Nei Ruffino, to deliver some beautiful artwork. Tynion’s dialogue for Roy and Starfire is always enjoyable and he once again proved that he can write a great present day Jason Todd or Red Hood. The balance in Jason’s character speaks for Tynion’s consistency throughout his entire run. Another great aspect of character that Tynion showed off was relentlessness when it comes to villains. With this issue, Tynion showed a little glimpse of how the Outlaws would regularly operate under Jason’s leadership.
