Review: Descender #2

by bucky· April 13, 2015· in Reviews· 0 comments tags: Descender, Dustin Nguyen, Image Comics, Jeff Lemire
Jeff Lemire launched this sci-fi adventure last month with Image Comics, in what is a strong introduction to a galaxy that lays out the geography and politics for an entirely new and fascinating world that’s teetering on the brink of disaster. Moon-sized robots, called Harvesters, appear in the sky of one of the core planets of the United Galactic Council, causing billions to panic. When they disappear, their worlds get turned upside down. AI is criminalized, and robots everywhere are hunted down to prevent the tragedy ever again. At the center of it all is the abandoned child companion, Tim-21, pulling along his robot dog, Bandit, as we begin to learn what exactly these two have to do with everything.

Horror on the 13th: December 2011 (The New 52)

by bucky· December 13, 2011· in Horror on the 13th· 0 comments tags: Animal Man, DC Comics, IVampire, Jeff Lemire, Joshua Hale Fialkov, Scott Snyder, Swamp Thing, The New 52
And, we’re back! It’s written form again for Horror on the 13th! I can’t decide what I like better. Really, I just like mixing it up, because to me, talking about horror is talking about horror. In fact, I agree with that statement almost to a fault. I mean, I really do like and appreciate all horror, even the bad stuff. Horror taps into something very primal in all of us. It’s the fear of the unknown or the mysterious or the abnormal. Mostly, it’s trying to understand things that we, as humans, don’t understand or have no way of understanding. When it’s not that, it’s blood and guts and monsters! Personally, I think all those are the same, but that is always up for debate. Horror has debates! And theories! I love it.

With Halloween upon us, Susan, Simon, and Sheldon have decided to travel to France and film a very special episode of “Did You Catch All That?”. Okay, so that’s not entirely true, but Simon is speaking French. Susan announces some changes to the Halloween Costume Contest. And Sheldon? He’s just scary. See what we all pick in our “We’ve Got Issues” segments, including who has a very special issue he’s sharing for the first time. Progress is always encouraged in comic addiction. A very big event comes to a close in the Marvel Universe (or does it), and we take a look at one of the most talented creators out there is “I Made it Myself.” Check out how crazy we can get in the month of October! “Did You Catch All That?”

Sequential Sunday: Strange Tales II #1 of 3

by John Mueller· January 30, 2011· in Sequential Sunday· 0 comments tags: Bill Crabtree, Dash Shaw, Jeff Lemire, Jhonen Vasquez, Kate Beaton, Marvel, Nicolas Gurewitch, Rafael Grampá, Shannon Wheeler, Strange Tales II
When Marvel’s 2009 indie-comics superstars meets time-tested superheroes mini-series Strange Tales was released it seemed almost too good to be true. This highly unique assemblage of oddities was so pleasingly originally and off the typical spandex path that a follow up seemed implausible at best. Happily, fans of the publisher didn’t mind seeing their favorite heroes taking a good natured (and overdue) ribbing and the series was a surprise hit. Now we have the three issue mini-series Strange Tales II and the hit versus miss ratio is even more solidly in the positive here than it was for its predecessor.
